PBL: Expedition Hour

0.00

Expedition Hour is our term for “genius hour” or “20% time” - a notion brought up time after time in the business world - and now increasingly, progressive education. However, there are not many resources available that guide schools towards creating this large endeavor. Luckily, you have this booklet!

The basic idea of expedition hour is to provide students with an hour of “organized chaos” where they can explore, discover, and develop ideas. Also, this is time for students to unwind and organize their thoughts. This is inspired by Google’s “genius hour” - where developers are forced to take 60 minutes each day to work on whatever they’d like. Notable success stories: Google Maps, Gmail, and Google Patents.

Expedition Hour will look different for every school and student. This is not the end-all be-all framework. Our goal is to provide you with enough researched evidence to discover this time as valuable, then provide you the resources to implement it. We recognize that this movement will not be readily accepted by every administration or educator, but hopefully with enough evidence, we can convince them otherwise.

This booklet contains:

  • Research surrounding why Expedition Hour is needed and valuable

  • Struggles you may face and how to overcome them

  • Ideas on how to administer the paired PBL resource

  • Inspirations for improving and/or expanding on Expedition Hour
