Standards are written in teacher language. A model can quickly rewrite one so students can actually read it, and shorten it without much fuss. The catch is that "shorter" sometimes means "missing something," so the useful skill is reading the result with a critical eye.
Below is a worked example with three real eighth-grade reading standards. Pick one and step it through two rewrites: first into language an eighth grader could understand, then a shorter, plainer version. Watch what each prompt changes, and keep an eye on what the last step leaves out.

The first rewrite is the real win: a wall of teacher language becomes something a student can read on their own. The second step is where to slow down. Shorter is friendlier, but watch RL.8.1 lose "most strongly," or RL.8.2's "without giving your own opinion" hang on by a thread. Whether that matters is a judgment call, and it's exactly the call worth handing to students.
