Every few years a new tool shows up that's supposed to change everything about school. The calculator. The internet. The smartphone. Now AI. Every one of them turned out to be useful, and not one of them, on its own, touched the things education actually runs on. That difference is worth getting straight before you hand AI to a class.

AI has been making headlines and dominating social media, with entrepreneurs touting "10 NEW and AMAZING AI prompts to REVOLUTIONIZE your LIFE." While recent advancements in artificial intelligence are undeniably impressive and awe-inspiring, it's crucial to recognize that AI is a tool intended to enhance our lives, rather than a substitute for the systemic changes that are necessary.

These fictional accounts show a familiar move: one tool standing in for a whole system, whether that's a degree, a teacher, or a school. The rest of this page is about why that swap doesn't work.

Numerous innovative tools have been introduced into classrooms, including calculators, the Internet, tablets/smartphones, e-books, video conferencing, and online Learning Management Systems (LMS).

A calculator serves as a valuable aid in mathematics, but it does not render mathematics obsolete, nor can it singularly address the pedagogical challenges inherent in a math class. Similarly, Wikipedia is an excellent resource for research, yet it cannot replace all other forms of online research. The core nature of math classes and school research assignments remain mostly unchanged. To tackle significant concerns — such as curricular standards, student assessment, adequate school and teacher funding, children's rights, and disciplinary policies — systemic changes are still imperative.

For each, decide if it's a tool you can add, or a systemic change a tool can't make for you. Sort all ten and see where they land.

And despite the introduction of these tools, the fundamental structure of education remains largely the same. (Not to mention that debates persist about whether students should be permitted to use calculators and Wikipedia, let alone AI in the classroom.)

Likewise, we can't outsource strong content or pedagogy to tools themselves. Technology is often placed on a pedestal as the way to make education more efficient, but efficiency is often at the expense of student learning. We could simply put kids on computers and have them learn from an AI tutor all day, and students may in-turn learn facts much more productively. But they will not have the critical consciousness to navigate the world with this knowledge alone. There is immense value in having a democratic classroom filled with peers and a professional teacher guiding the way. The edu-tech arms race toward making the perfect AI tool cannot make us lose sight of the purpose of education.

A tool can make a task faster. It can't decide what's worth teaching, who school is for, or what we want learning to do for a person. Those are systemic questions, and answering them is still our work. AI belongs in the classroom the way a calculator does: it's one more thing on the desk, not a replacement for teaching.

A short discussion that gets at the difference between a tool and a system, starting with a technology students already take for granted, then turning to AI.

  1. name the last "everything" tool 5 min

    Ask: what's a technology that was supposed to completely change school? Calculators, the internet, smartphones, Google, YouTube. Pick one the class knows well. In pairs, list what it actually changed (faster, easier, new things possible) and what stayed exactly the same (you still take the class, still get graded, still have a teacher).

  2. sort the room 6 min

    Run the "tool, or deeper change?" sorter above as a class, or call out the ten items and have students vote with their hands. After each one, ask why. As you go, point out that the useful tools never end up on the "deeper change" side.

  3. read the hype like a critic optional

    Show the posts near the top of this page (or pull a few real ones). For each, ask students to find the swap: what single tool is standing in for what whole system? ("$20 chatbot" for a teacher; "12 prompts" for a degree.) Then ask what that pitch leaves out, and who benefits from us believing it.

  4. so where does AI fit? 4 min

    Each student finishes two sentences out loud or on a sticky note: "AI could genuinely help our class with ______." and "But it can't fix ______. That's up to people." Talk through a few of the answers together.

Banning a tool teaches no one to use it well. This activity goes with the handbook's call to be proactive, not reactive. When students can name what a tool does and doesn't do, they can use it on purpose.
